For as long as I can remember, I’ve experienced the same physiological reaction when reading the very last page of a book: my peripheral field of vision narrows, my heart rate increases significantly, and I involuntarily clench my jaw. I just finished reading Ann Beattie’s Chilly Scenes of Winter, and these symptoms were particularly strong. I’m not sure what this means, if anything.
